Summary:The Augustinian doctrine of the Absolute has not been developed, according to the author of the essay, within a monolithic cultural and social context, but in a pluralistic situation characterized by conflicting tendencies (Paganism, Christianity, Manicheism, Judaism, etc.). Moving from this framework, Augustine works out through the data of the Revelation the Platonic dimension of the innate character of the truth, the subsistence of the absolute being, the action of the Absolute within the history, the human capability of reaching an objective truth, the rational necessity of the historical Revelation, the contradictory of any kind of relativist pluralism.
