Description
Summary:In recent decades, scientific interest in Augustine's sermons increased, because these texts present an interesting addition to the theology of his doctrinal writings and offer insight in the Christian mindset of his time. This article shows how Augustine himself reflected on the significance of the episcopal preaching office. he considered it a heavy duty and responsibility to teach his congregation the meaning of God's word. At the same time he indicates that he is not preaching in his own name, but in Christ's. Subsequently, this contribution studies Augustine's concrete homelitic praxis : his method of 'prepared improvisation', the relation between the preacher Augustine and his actively interfering audience, the theological topics he dealt with in his sermons, the exegesis of Scripture he deployed, the rethoric and eloquent style he used (compared with the theory of the preaching methodology he developed in De doctrina christiana 4), the didactic concerns he had and the specific Latin he used in his sermons. The two parts of this article illustrate that according to Augustine's own praxis and theory, sermons are a double form of teaching : the preacher teaches his congregation and is at the same time being taught by God.
